1Password launches a way for AI agents to log in on your behalf without seeing your password
techcrunch ·
1Password has introduced a new feature called '1Password for Agents' that allows AI assistants to log into user accounts without ever accessing the actual passwords. This system works by verifying the agent's digital identity through a unique key, after which the user receives an alert and must manually approve the login attempt. Once confirmed, 1Password fills in the credentials on behalf of the agent, enabling it to complete tasks while keeping sensitive data secure. The platform supports various AI services, including those from Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Grok. This launch addresses growing concerns about security as consumers increasingly delegate tasks to automated agents. The timing coincides with reports that U.S. banks are detecting similar agentic activity within user accounts, raising questions about authentication methods. Bankers have expressed alarm over the situation, emphasizing that customers should never share their usernames and passwords directly.
