A serverless, data-driven Git metrics dashboard using Amazon Quick Sight
aws ·
The article presents a serverless solution for collecting Git metrics from GitHub and GitLab and visualizing them in interactive Amazon Quick Sight dashboards. The event-driven pipeline uses EventBridge Scheduler, AWS Step Functions, Lambda, Secrets Manager, and Amazon S3 to automate data collection without dedicated infrastructure. A change detector skips processing when no relevant activity is found, while the system supports full and incremental loads, automatic refreshes every 24 hours, and parallel repository processing when the repository count exceeds the configured threshold. Metrics such as commits, pull requests, issues, contributors, languages, and activity timestamps are stored as JSON and analytics-ready CSV files. The post provides deployment instructions covering personal access tokens, CloudFormation, Lambda packages, workflow validation, Quick Sight data sources, dashboards, optional alerts, and resource cleanup. The solution is also presented as an observability layer for measuring development velocity and evaluating the impact of AI coding tools over time.
