A third of ChatGPT ads appear in irrelevant conversations

An analysis by AI visibility platform Searchable of over 11,000 ads served in real ChatGPT conversations between July 4 and August 4, 2026 found that a third (33%) of ads were completely unrelated to the conversation. Only 27% of ads were a direct match to the user's request, while 40% were a contextual match to something mentioned earlier in the thread. More than two-thirds (68%) of ads appeared in conversations where the user showed no purchase intent at any point. By conversation, 40% of ad-carrying chats contained at least one unrelated ad, and in 28% every ad was unrelated to the topic. Sector performance varied widely: marketing and B2B services saw 47% unrelated ads and software/SaaS saw 45%, while data brokers, travel, and automotive had the best relevance rates. OpenAI had said that user dismissals of ads had fallen by half since the ad platform launched in February, but Searchable's data showed the share of irrelevant ads stayed near a third with no sign of improvement. The article concludes that an ad placement inside an assistant is not a substitute for being the answer, as misplaced ads are likely to be ignored while product recommendations within the response convert better.
