Adobe is testing how well AI agents can use editing tools like a Photoshop professional would

Adobe researchers and UC San Diego have developed EditAgent, an AI system designed to perform image editing with the precision of a Photoshop professional. The system breaks down complex tasks into sub-steps, pairing a general-purpose editor with specialized tools for specific actions like sharpening or zooming. Instead of iteratively refining results, which can accumulate errors, EditAgent generates multiple variants in parallel from the original image. A standard language model then evaluates these candidates using hard data, including close-up crops and measured statistics on brightness and color changes. This verification approach allows unmodified language models to outperform those specifically fine-tuned for evaluation tasks. While EditAgent requires approximately ten times more compute power than single editors, it produces verified outputs that can be used to train faster, more accurate editing models. The research highlights how structured data improves AI judgment and offers a pathway to enhance commercial products like Adobe's Creative Cloud agents.
