After accusations of selling ‘perv glasses,’ Meta prepares to sell a pair without a camera
techcrunch ·
Meta’s camera-equipped smart glasses have outperformed other entrants in the market, but they have also drawn accusations of being “perv glasses” and fears that they represent invasive surveillance. The Information reports that Meta is developing a camera-free model called Luna, which would connect users to Meta’s AI chatbot and Muse, its AI consumer agent. Luna would use six built-in microphones for conversations with the chatbot, while a button on the side would activate the AI system when pressed. The glasses could be unveiled as soon as Meta Connect, Meta’s annual hardware and developer event in Menlo Park next week. TechCrunch says it contacted Meta for more information. The smart-glasses industry is growing and Meta remains near the front, but concerns about usability, cost and privacy persist, many consumers remain unsure whether or how to use the devices, and Reality Labs continues to lose a gargantuan amount of money, according to the company’s April earnings report.
