AI agents are coming to Rivian’s cars
techcrunch ·
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe announced at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company plans to integrate third-party AI agents, such as those from Anthropic, into its electric vehicles. While Rivian currently offers an in-house AI assistant for basic commands like adjusting climate control or summarizing news, the future strategy involves a sophisticated agentic framework. This system routes user requests to either local edge models or cloud-based frontier AI depending on complexity. Scaringe emphasized that safety-critical functions like braking and steering will remain strictly under human or traditional vehicle control, never handed over to AI agents. The integration requires significant technical coordination with AI labs to ensure seamless data plumbing and context sharing across devices. Rivian aims to create a 'magical' experience where the car understands broader user contexts, such as meal planning based on previous conversations. Although no specific release date was provided, the company is hosting an 'AI & Autonomy Day' in December to discuss these advancements further.
