AI Companion Tolan Secures $30M as It Gains Traction in a Crowded Field
aiinsider ·
AI companion application Tolan has secured an additional $30 million in funding from prominent investors including Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Homebrew. This latest investment round doubles the company's total capital raised and pushes its valuation above the previous $120 million mark to over $268 million according to PitchBook estimates. The app features a cartoonish character designed to assist users with daily tasks, emotional support, and goal achievement through tiered membership subscriptions. Tolan reports strong traction with more than 250,000 active users who have engaged in over 70 million conversations in the past year. Approximately 70% of its user base consists of women, with 40% identifying as parents, contributing to annual recurring revenue in the double-digit millions. The startup distinguishes itself in a volatile market where competitors like Friend and Character.AI have faced significant criticism or bankruptcy proceedings. However, Tolan faces increasing competition from AI agents such as Meta’s Muse and must navigate legal risks associated with AI-driven emotional support interactions.
