AI data startup Micro1 reaches $500M gross run rate amid AI training boom
techcrunch ·
Micro1, a four-year-old startup providing AI training data, has reached a $500 million gross annual run rate, up from $100 million eight months prior. The company retains 60-70% of that, putting its net annual run rate between $150 million and $200 million. It still lags competitors like Mercor and Handshake, which have higher gross annualized revenue. The growth is driven by strong demand from AI labs and corporations for unique training data. Micro1 expects margins to expand over time, particularly through synthetic data and off-the-shelf data sold to multiple customers, which can reach 80-90% gross margins. Selling the same datasets to multiple clients has sparked controversy, but founder Ali Ansari said Micro1 does not sell its data to Chinese model makers. The company started as an AI recruiting startup before pivoting into data labeling. Micro1 raised a Series A at a $500 million valuation last September and may have recently raised another round at a higher valuation.
