AI Helps Researcher Find Exact Solutions to a Longstanding Fusion Physics Problem
aiinsider ·
University of Maryland researcher Matt Landreman utilized AI, specifically GPT-6 Astra Pro, to discover two families of exact mathematical solutions for magnetic configurations relevant to fusion energy. These solutions demonstrate that strongly asymmetric, doughnut-shaped magnetic fields can maintain perfectly nested surfaces while balancing plasma pressure, addressing a longstanding question in magnetohydrodynamics. Landreman manually verified every equation and formula, ensuring the mathematical rigor of the findings which were posted on the preprint server arXiv. The primary value of this work lies in providing explicit reference answers to test and validate numerical simulation software used in fusion research. While the study confirms the mathematical possibility of such equilibria, it does not establish plasma stability, practical reactor designs, or improved energy output. The findings serve as benchmarks for researchers checking the accuracy of codes used to study stellarators and other fusion devices. This research highlights how AI can assist in complex mathematical discovery while human experts verify the results. The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and is under consideration for publication in the Journal of Plasma Physics.
