AI Is Making a Mess of Nurses’ Schedules. They Say It’s a Safety Issue
wired ·
Nurses at HCA Healthcare, the largest US hospital chain, are reporting significant safety and operational issues with Timpani, an AI scheduling tool co-developed with Palantir. Since its rollout in 2023, staff members allege that the software frequently ignores shift preferences, assigns back-to-back shifts, and creates understaffed teams, particularly on Sundays. These errors have reportedly led to increased burnout, higher rates of absenteeism, and concerns that patient care is being compromised due to inexperienced staffing ratios. While HCA executives maintain that human managers retain final oversight and that the tool improves efficiency, nurses describe a system that overrides clinical judgment and offers little recourse for schedule appeals. The controversy extends beyond HCA, as Rayus Radiology has also faced complaints about similar Palantir-based software causing patient data errors. Critics argue that the lack of transparency and auditability in these AI systems poses risks to both worker well-being and patient safety.
