AI PACs spent millions trying to shape Congress. Here’s how they fared.

Political action committees supporting and opposing the AI industry spent millions to influence the midterm elections, yielding mixed results for their candidates. Pro-industry groups like American Mission and Building the Future collectively spent $4.8 million, but several heavily backed candidates, including South Carolina Senate hopeful Darlene Graham, lost their races. Conversely, LTF’s Democratic arm, Think Big, successfully supported Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz in his reelection bid. Groups advocating for stricter AI safeguards also saw varied outcomes, with Public First backing winning Democrats while Guardrails Alliance spent over $1 million to oppose losing Republican candidates. Analysts suggest that much of this spending was overshadowed by a broader Democratic wave and significant contributions from Elon Musk, which led to losses for many Republican nominees. The Leading the Future coalition emphasized that primary elections are more effective for building name recognition and setting policy agendas than general election contests. Meanwhile, opponents aim to make accepting AI funding politically toxic, arguing that such associations damage candidates' credibility among distrustful voters. Both sides indicate they will continue their financial efforts in future elections, particularly the 2028 cycle.
