Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national and engineer at OpenAI, was arrested on October 9 for allegedly installing an audio surveillance device in a confidential executive conference room. The device was concealed in toilet paper and plugged into a TV's USB port, with a second unit found in his bag. According to the indictment, Alfozan used prompts entered via his wife’s chatbot account to design the recorder, effectively 'vibe-coding' the spy gear between September 24 and 30. OpenAI stated there is no evidence that he accessed model weights, source code, or customer data, but has since terminated his employment. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that protecting American superintelligence innovations remains a top counterintelligence priority. If convicted, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. This incident highlights the growing financial and strategic ties between OpenAI and Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
