Amazon just tripled its order of Nvidia chips over ‘surging demand’
techcrunch ·
Amazon and Nvidia announced an expanded partnership in which Amazon will add another 2 million Nvidia GPU chips to its AWS data centers, including Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra models, with delivery planned for 2027 and 2028. This follows a deal five months earlier for more than 1 million Nvidia GPUs, and Nvidia said demand has exceeded expectations. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal is estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars. The partnership extends beyond chips to include Nvidia networking hardware, open models, CPUs, data processing software, and robotics platforms integrated across AWS. This comes alongside Amazon's own AI chip efforts, such as Trainium and Graviton, indicating the company is still heavily relying on Nvidia despite developing alternatives. Nvidia also reported second-quarter sales of $96.2 billion, beating analyst estimates, with data center revenue at $89 billion, up 117% year over year. The company forecast $108 billion in third-quarter revenue and has committed $279 billion to secure supply and manufacturing capacity for future data-center projects.
