AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, a startup specializing in spatial intelligence and world models, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval. World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su to lead frontier AI research. The startup develops software that generates and simulates three-dimensional environments from text, image, and video inputs, aiming to solve physical reasoning tasks that current language models struggle with. This acquisition allows AMD to gain deeper insights into AI workloads to better shape its future hardware roadmaps and compete more effectively against Nvidia. Although Nvidia remains significantly larger financially, this move reinforces AMD's position as a serious challenger in the AI chip market. The purchase price represents a substantial increase from World Labs' previous valuation, suggesting AMD is primarily acquiring the team's expertise rather than just conceptual products.
