AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, a leading developer of deep learning models designed to understand physical reality, in a deal valued at $8.2 billion. World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li, a pioneer in computer vision and AI, will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist following the acquisition. The move aims to strengthen AMD's position against rival Nvidia by integrating advanced world model technology into its chip-making roadmap and ecosystem. World Labs' flagship product, Marble, focuses on creating high-fidelity simulations for entertainment and robot training, addressing the need for synthetic data in general-purpose robotics. Li stated that the partnership allows her company to scale technical breakthroughs closer to hardware infrastructure. This strategic alliance builds upon a previous inference optimization and training partnership between the two firms established last year. The transaction is expected to close before the end of the year, pending regulatory approval.
