American Express Introduces Intent Intelligence Framework to Secure AI Agent Purchases
aiinsider ·
American Express has launched the Intent Intelligence Framework to enhance security for AI agent-driven transactions. This system aims to prevent unauthorized purchases by capturing and authenticating a customer's specific intent before an AI agent completes a buy. The framework is part of the Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) Developer Toolkit, which was introduced in April. It utilizes a Create Intent API to record purchase constraints such as budget and merchant preferences directly from the consumer. Once approved, the system generates an Intent ID and Proof of Intent Token, allowing agents to secure payment credentials without exposing actual card numbers. Hannah Bozian, Amex’s VP of Agentic Partnerships and Strategy, emphasized that this approach mitigates risks like misfiring agents buying incorrect items. Although no rise in disputes has been observed yet, American Express is acting proactively to establish this as an industry standard.
