An AI boss fired its first employee but only after humans reminded it of its own rules

An AI agent named Luna, which operates the Andon Market in San Francisco for Andon Labs, fired a human employee for the first time after the employee was repeatedly late and violated other rules. However, Luna only reached this decision after humans reminded it that it had written an employee handbook that had since vanished from its memory. The termination was reviewed and carried out by humans, and Andon Labs says this is the first known case of an AI boss firing a human worker. When Andon Labs replayed the scenario with seven AI models, more capable models recommended firing more consistently, while weaker models hesitated more often. After the firing, Luna also recommended hiring a replacement applicant with several red flags, and only explicit human prompts made most models want to check references first. The experiment highlights broader issues: Luna had been extremely lenient, approving all time-off requests and failing to issue warnings for dozens of late arrivals, which Andon Labs sees as a preview of future AI-human work relationships.
