Anthropic grows revenue twelvefold but posts $23 billion loss

Anthropic has reported a twelvefold increase in quarterly revenue, reaching nearly $17 billion, while simultaneously posting a significant operating loss. Despite this substantial growth in income, the company's operating costs totaled $17.5 billion, exceeding its revenue and resulting in a net loss of $23.3 billion for the quarter. This financial swing follows a profitable previous quarter and is attributed primarily to $5 billion spent on short-term compute capacity and $2 billion in employee donation matching. The AI firm has been addressing a severe compute crunch by securing deals with major tech companies and chipmakers to access over 3.5 gigawatts of power. Looking ahead, Anthropic plans to double its power capacity next year amid massive commitments for data center leases. These high operational expenses are expected to pressure its upcoming initial public offering, which aims to raise approximately $100 billion. A portion of these IPO funds is anticipated to come from Japanese investors as the company prepares for its market debut.
