Anthropic is still grappling with the economics of compute
techcrunch ·
As Anthropic approaches its IPO, the company has disclosed that its compute costs are consuming an increasing share of its revenue, raising concerns about profitability. In the third quarter, revenue grew significantly to $17 billion, yet operating losses widened because compute expenses rose to 58% of total revenue, up from 48% in the previous period. This deterioration in margins was driven by a surge in demand that forced Anthropic to secure expensive short-term compute commitments, totaling $10 billion for the quarter. The company relied heavily on 'neocloud' providers like SpaceX and Nscale, which charge higher rates than traditional hyperscalers but offer greater flexibility. Although Anthropic is investing in its own infrastructure through the 'Anthropic Direct' project, these efforts cannot currently keep pace with the rapid growth in demand. Consequently, the company expects compute to remain its largest operating expense for the foreseeable future. While high revenue growth may temporarily mask these margin pressures, the situation highlights the AI industry's heavy dependence on global infrastructure buildouts. Ultimately, Anthropic’s financial health remains vulnerable to fluctuations in compute prices and potential disruptions in data center development.
