Anthropic launches a free AI scanner for open-source projects

Anthropic has introduced Cyber Mission, a comprehensive initiative designed to safeguard critical infrastructure and open-source software against cyber threats. The program's Critical Infrastructure Defense Program provides operators of essential services like power grids and water systems with access to Claude models, engineering support, and threat analysis, backed by founding partners such as CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks. In a separate effort, the company released a free AI scanner specifically for open-source projects that automatically identifies vulnerabilities and suggests patches. This tool aims to assist small volunteer teams who maintain much of the modern software ecosystem, addressing the imbalance where attackers possess advanced AI while defenders lag behind. Anthropic anticipates an accuracy rate above 90 percent for the scanner, though it acknowledges that reports are generated without human review and may contain errors. Project maintainers can opt into this security service through GitHub. The launch highlights Anthropic's commitment to providing defenders with tools comparable to those available to attackers.
