Anthropic has reportedly signed compute contracts worth up to $517 billion over eleven months, locking in at least 14.8 gigawatts of computing power on top of its existing capacity. The company is also planning its own data centers, though its total planned capacity likely remains below OpenAI's 30-gigawatt target for 2030. Neither company can cover these commitments from revenue alone, with Anthropic's annualized revenue exceeding $65 billion and OpenAI's above $40 billion. Earlier in 2026, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned rivals about investing too fast and not understanding the risks, but now Anthropic is racing to catch up. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has urged caution, warning about "unsustainable silliness" from neo-cloud providers and noting that technical progress could turn expensive projects into bad bets.
