Anthropic reverses course and pays for news content for the first time
decoder ·
Anthropic has signed its first-ever licensing agreement with a news publisher, marking a significant shift in its previous stance on content usage. The partner for this initial deal is the Associated Press (AP), as reported by Adweek. This partnership allows Claude to display live AP election results during the US midterm elections with proper source attribution. Previously, Anthropic argued that scraping publisher content was legally permissible under fair use and rejected such partnerships. However, without access to current data, Claude faced limitations on time-sensitive queries, while publishers blocked crawlers to force negotiations. Rival OpenAI already holds over a dozen similar deals with major media companies like Axel Springer and News Corp. The Associated Press also served as the first licensing partner for both Google and OpenAI. Financial terms and the duration of the Anthropic-AP agreement were not disclosed.
