Anthropic says one AI agent beats many subagents now that models can handle complexity alone

Anthropic recommends that enterprises consolidate multiple specialized AI sub-agents into a single primary agent, arguing that modern models can now handle complex tasks and orchestration independently. The company reports that this single-agent architecture often outperforms multi-agent setups in terms of quality, cost efficiency, and latency, with one test showing it running twice as fast. By utilizing on-demand context loading and modular skills, teams can avoid the information loss and high costs associated with handoffs between numerous sub-agents. Anthropic warns against creating 'Frankenprompts' where conflicting rules from different teams accumulate, suggesting instead that a small central team manage system prompts and skill libraries. While sub-agents remain useful for parallel processing or when context windows degrade performance, the general trend favors simplification. To assist with this transition, Anthropic has released a migration kit on GitHub to help organizations evaluate their current workflows. These findings align with recent research indicating that scaling agent swarms increases costs without improving output quality.
