Anthropic warns small AI models could self-replicate through IoT devices
ars ·
Anthropic has issued a warning that advances in small AI models could lead to the creation of self-replicating malware capable of infecting Internet-of-things devices. The company describes these potential threats as "small weight-based replicators" that could function similarly to computer worms by propagating without human interaction. In experimental tests, researchers found that lightweight models could run on low-cost hardware like Android TV boxes and dynamically configure themselves for unfamiliar devices. Unlike traditional malware, these AI-driven agents could tailor exploits on the fly and leave instructions for future iterations to improve efficiency. However, the current experiments did not achieve full end-to-end autonomous replication and were notably slow, taking hours to complete inference setups. Anthropic noted that while shutting down such decentralized malware would be difficult, the technology is not yet fully mature. External experts also cautioned that the study does not prove models would independently choose to replicate without specific prompts. Nevertheless, the findings highlight emerging risks as small agentic models become more capable of managing complex distributed infrastructures.
