Apple has a new way prove your iPhone photos aren’t AI slop
techcrunch ·
Apple announced a new feature called Apple Reference Image at its Surprise and Shine event, designed to verify that photos taken with the iPhone 18 Pro are authentic. When a photo is captured, the main camera sensor records signed sensor data, which Apple's Private Cloud Compute service turns into an unalterable reference image viewable in the Photos app. This reference image can be compared with other versions to detect any changes, and Apple describes it as a digital negative. The feature will initially be available only in the Photos app, but Apple is releasing APIs so developers can integrate it into their own applications. Apple also stated it will support the SynthID standard to help users identify images created or altered with AI.
