Apple restricts dating apps and AI companions to users 18 and up
techcrunch ·
Apple has updated its App Store policies to restrict access to online dating applications and AI companions featuring sexual or romantic content for users under the age of 18. This move aligns with broader efforts to enhance minor protection, including global age assurance technology and improved parental controls. Starting November 16, developers must assign an 18+ rating to apps offering dating features and include specific content descriptors to accurately reflect these functionalities. The policy also impacts popular AI companion platforms like Character.AI and Replika, which often cater to younger demographics but may facilitate romantic interactions. Additionally, apps that share real-world user locations with others are now required to disclose this functionality in their ratings, raising privacy considerations. A notable exception exists in Brazil, where family location-sharing apps can obtain a government rating from the Ministry of Justice instead of adhering to the standard A16 classification. These changes aim to create a safer digital environment while ensuring transparency regarding sensitive app features.
