ArXiv caps submissions at two per month as AI paper flood overwhelms the preprint server
decoder ·
ArXiv has implemented a new limit of two submissions per person per month to address the overwhelming volume of AI-generated papers. This rule, effective October 1, 2026, aims to manage a surge in monthly submissions that reached over 40,000, doubling in just two years. The restriction applies across all categories and counts rejected papers toward the limit, though co-authors are unaffected. Volunteer moderators have been strained by an influx of low-quality, narrowly focused, or AI-written texts that delay processing for other authors. ArXiv describes this cap as a temporary measure while it develops better moderation tools for AI content. Concurrently, ArXiv is transitioning to independence from Cornell University with significant funding from private foundations. Meanwhile, major tech labs continue expanding their automated research capabilities despite mixed results from independent evaluations.
