At UBS, AI skills are now a condition for landing a job

Swiss bank UBS now requires AI skills from junior banking applicants, including graduates and interns applying for 2027 roles in Global Banking and Markets. Candidates must demonstrate how they can use AI to improve outcomes and efficiency, and interviews will include questions about their AI usage, according to the Financial Times. This requirement complements traditional criteria such as strong academic degrees and applies to other new positions, making UBS one of the first major banks to adopt such a demand. The move reflects a broader trend of banks automating routine junior tasks like financial analysis and client presentations. Spain's Santander is similarly seeking advanced AI users for some trainee programs, while Morgan Stanley analysts predict more than 200,000 banking jobs in Europe could disappear within five years. Despite this shift, JPMorgan's Europe head Conor Hillery cautioned that juniors must not lose fundamental skills, and UBS is also testing analyst avatars for client presentations.
