Authorities arrest 2 alleged members of prolific hacking group TeamPCP
ars ·
Australian police arrested two men accused of being members of the hacking group TeamPCP, which compromised over 1,000 organizations globally through supply-chain attacks. The suspects, from Western Australian towns, were charged with 14 offenses and face prison sentences of up to 20 years if convicted. TeamPCP used a self-propagating worm named Shai-Hulud that infected software development pipelines and spread to other packages. The worm stole credentials from infected systems and used smart contracts to control its operations. The arrests followed an investigation highlighted by security researchers who noted the group's operational lapses. Researchers suggested that large language models may have lowered the technical barriers for such criminal campaigns.
