Base Labs launches an open-weight AI safety partnership with Hugging Face and Goodfire
techcrunch ·
Baseten and its Base Labs research arm have announced a partnership with Hugging Face and Goodfire AI to develop safety evaluation and monitoring infrastructure for open-weight models. The initiative comes amid concerns that safeguards can be removed from open models through a technique known as abliteration, with Hugging Face listing more than 6,000 such models. Base Labs plans to develop and publish methods for training and monitoring open models, presenting the work as a transparent safety standard integrated into model development and deployment. The companies have not disclosed the partnership’s technical details, while Goodfire has said that safety should be built into open models and provided by the companies that serve them. Baseten raised $1.5 billion in a Series F round in June, reaching a $13 billion valuation, while Goodfire raised $150 million in a Series B round earlier this year. Baseten is inviting developers to contribute to the framework and help build an ecosystem of open models that are safe and accessible.
