Boston Dynamics Opens Atlas Training Center at Hyundai’s Georgia Metaplant
aiinsider ·
Boston Dynamics has inaugurated the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant America in Georgia to train its Atlas humanoid robots for automotive manufacturing tasks. Initially, the robots are learning parts logistics and sequencing before transitioning to component assembly by 2030, with future plans including handling repetitive and physically demanding duties. Hyundai intends to deploy 25,000 Atlas robots across its global Hyundai Motor and Kia plants while establishing a U.S. facility capable of producing 30,000 robots annually. The current RMAC facility is expected to expand into a building ten times larger in 2027 to support ongoing automotive preparations. Beyond automotive applications, Boston Dynamics aims to explore Atlas uses in sectors such as aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences starting in 2027. This expansion involves discussions with existing customers to gather data that supports further training for the robots. Zack Jackowski, Boston Dynamics’ chief product and technology officer, emphasized the partnership with Hyundai to pioneer physical AI at an enterprise scale.
