BrainGate Pioneer John Donoghue to Advise Subsense on Scientific Path for Non-Surgical Brain–Computer Interfaces
aiinsider ·
Subsense, an AI-native neurotechnology company, has appointed BrainGate pioneer John P. Donoghue as a scientific advisor to guide the development of its non-surgical, nanoparticle-based brain-computer interfaces. Donoghue, a founding figure in BCI research recently honored with the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, will focus on demonstrating the localization and activation of nanoparticles within specific brain structures. His guidance aims to establish the biological evidence required to translate preclinical findings into human applications. Subsense is currently pursuing two parallel programs: using magnetoelectric nanoparticles for Parkinson’s disease stimulation and neural sensing to aid communication for ALS patients. Donoghue advocates for a stepwise approach that first proves controlled stimulation in intact animals before testing effects in disease models. He emphasizes the potential for combining precise recording and stimulation to reconstruct functions for individuals with disabilities. Both technologies remain in the preclinical stage as the company works toward integrating sensing and stimulation into a single platform.
