Brian Chesky interview: AI agents need their own operating system
techcrunch ·
In a recent interview, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky discussed the company's strategic approach to AI, emphasizing that chatbots are insufficient for travel discovery due to their lack of collaborative features and browsing depth. Instead, Airbnb is developing interfaces that blend traditional search with conversational elements to support 'multiplayer' planning among groups. Chesky argues that current consumer AI tools have not yet succeeded because they lack a dedicated operating system built at the kernel level for seamless agent interoperability. He predicts that while apps will remain central under platforms like iOS, they must evolve into robust, agentic entities with rich user interfaces rather than disappearing entirely. Voice interaction is also set to play a significant role in Airbnb’s future search and customer service capabilities. Additionally, Chesky noted that AI has already improved internal efficiency by reducing the need for informational meetings. The company aims to make its platform more agent-friendly to facilitate interactions between different AI systems.
