Build intelligent security for healthcare APIs with Amazon Bedrock
aws ·
The article describes how to build intelligent security monitoring for healthcare FHIR APIs using Amazon Bedrock. The solution adds a context-aware layer that analyzes access patterns, classifies data sensitivity, and generates natural-language compliance reports without affecting API latency because it runs asynchronously via Amazon EventBridge. It uses AWS services including Lambda, API Gateway, HealthLake, Cognito, Bedrock Guardrails, and Comprehend Medical, with a fail-open approach so monitoring outages don't block clinical workflows. The architecture also includes multiple PHI safeguards such as guardrails, PHI redaction, IP generalization, and PHI-free alerts. Anomaly detection builds per-user behavioral baselines rather than static thresholds, enabling detection of unusual access patterns. Data sensitivity classification uses Bedrock to assign levels like PUBLIC, INTERNAL, CONFIDENTIAL, or RESTRICTED based on clinical codes, avoiding hardcoded mapping tables. The post includes a code sample with a CloudFormation template and deployment scripts.
