Build observable enterprise agentic retrieval using Managed Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Base with AWS CloudFormation

This article describes a solution for building observable enterprise agentic retrieval using Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base and AWS CloudFormation. It moves beyond classic single-step RAG by using an agent that reasons, routes queries to the correct knowledge base, retrieves iteratively, and generates cited answers. The Managed Knowledge Base enables this through its AgenticRetrieveStream API, while the AgentCore Gateway exposes each knowledge base as an MCP tool without extra infrastructure. The deployment consists of four CloudFormation stacks that create knowledge bases, a gateway, an agent runtime, and CloudWatch dashboards. It includes two distinct synthetic corpora—financial and weather—so the agent must make real routing decisions between knowledge bases. The solution embeds seven layers of observability, including metrics, span traces, token usage, and evaluation scores, plus both on-demand and continuous evaluation. All components are provisioned through a single deploy command, requiring prerequisites such as Bedrock model access and CloudWatch Transaction Search.
