Building AI builders: Playbook for closing the AI knowledge-capability gap
aws ·
This article outlines a six-week structured program designed to bridge the gap between AI conceptual knowledge and practical building capabilities for non-technical business professionals. AWS researchers found that while many employees discuss AI, they lack hands-on experience due to barriers like insufficient scaffolding and fear of failure. To address this, the team created a program pairing participants with mentors and user-friendly tools such as Amazon Bedrock, Kiro IDE, and Strands Agents SDK. Participants successfully built functional prototypes, including a multi-agent financial advisory tool, demonstrating that low-code environments can empower non-engineers. The results showed significant improvements in self-rated AI competency and confidence in identifying use cases. Key success factors included psychological safety, phased learning over intensive sprints, and the requirement to build real, demoable products rather than just theoretical concepts. This playbook offers a replicable model for organizations to transform AI observers into capable builders who can drive innovation and improve customer interactions.
