Businesses are using more AI and paying less for it, Ramp AI Index shows

According to the latest Ramp AI Index, US businesses are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence while simultaneously reducing their expenditures on it. Economist Ara Kharazian attributes this trend to significant price cuts on top-tier models and the availability of cheaper, more efficient standard and lite versions. The primary driver behind these cost reductions appears to be intense competition between OpenAI and Anthropic. While overall spending has decreased since peaking in July, usage volumes have risen by approximately 50 percent through late September. Market share data from late September shows Anthropic capturing 51 percent of token spending, compared to OpenAI's 44.5 percent. Despite the growth in adoption, open-source models remain a minor factor, accounting for less than five percent of business spending. The index relies on transaction data from over 70,000 US companies, though it primarily reflects API costs and skews toward large enterprise customers.
