OpenAI has updated ChatGPT with its new Images 2.6 model, enabling users to generate animated GIFs from text prompts or uploaded photos. This feature is now available to all ChatGPT and Codex users across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. The system creates flipbook-style animations by stringing together consistent character variations, addressing previous issues where earlier models altered appearances too significantly between frames. Beyond GIF creation, the update aims to accelerate overall image generation capabilities. For developers, OpenAI is releasing two API variants: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare for efficiency and Sunburst for higher quality. These variants were initially introduced with Image 2.5 but are now integrated into the broader ecosystem. OpenAI reports that users currently generate over four billion images per week, marking an increase of one billion since September.
