ChatGPT Health adds Epic integration for clinicians to import patient data
techcrunch ·
OpenAI announced it is integrating ChatGPT Health with Epic's electronic health record system, which holds data for over 325 million patients, allowing clinicians to import patient data and ask questions. The integration provides read-only access to records such as appointment notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation, enabling summarization, patient history review, and preparation for future appointments. In some deployments, clinicians can access ChatGPT directly within EHR workflows for pre-visit review and building clinical timelines without leaving a patient chart. OpenAI also introduced a Healthcare Public Data plug-in that can pull data from sources like ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed to help synthesize trial eligibility criteria and medication identifiers. The company is also letting organizations with a Business Associate Agreement use ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, and connectors for compliant workflows. This follows last month's rollout of ChatGPT for health to all U.S. consumers, with 300 million health-related queries per week, though OpenAI maintains AI is not suitable for diagnosis or treatment. The company cited a survey of 4,300 physician responses across 27 clinical use cases showing 99.1% were safe, but noted even a few unsafe answers can be harmful. Recent lawsuits have alleged ChatGPT gave a near-fatal recommendation and wrongful dosage advice.
