ChatGPT's new ad format fills the image generation loading screen with product carousels

OpenAI is introducing a new advertising format in ChatGPT that displays product carousels on the image generation loading screen for users in the United States. These display ads, which appear below the generated image, are clearly labeled as advertising and showcase products or associated experiences. The company plans to launch this test later in October with an initial group of advertisers. To support these efforts, OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools by integrating data pipelines from providers like Hightouch and Tealium, alongside attribution services such as AppsFlyer and Adjust. Brand safety measures include pilot programs with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, allowing select advertisers to use negative keywords to avoid unsuitable contexts. This development builds upon OpenAI's existing ad infrastructure, which has been active since February and currently operates in over 40 countries. The company reports an annualized ad revenue run rate of $1 billion and aims to reach $100 billion by 2030. Despite reaching 1.2 billion weekly users, only about five percent of ChatGPT users were paying subscribers earlier this year.
