Chrome is now shipping updates every 2 weeks as AI changes the security landscape
techcrunch ·
Google has officially switched Chrome from a four-week to a two-week release schedule, starting with Chrome 153 on desktop, iOS, and Android. The change is driven by Chrome's security strategy in the AI era, as automated AI tools and increased patch volumes make faster release cycles beneficial for managing security fixes. A shorter cycle helps minimize the "N-day" patch gap between when a vulnerability is known and when it is fixed. Faster releases also allow Chrome to ship features more quickly, which is important given new AI-era browser competitors like Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Perplexity's Comet, and DuckDuckGo's browser. Google is also experimenting with adding more AI features to Chrome and needs faster updates to iterate on them. The move benefits the broader web because Chrome's dominant position can set industry standards, and Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already adopted similar two-week schedules. Chrome previously moved from a six-week to a four-week release cycle in 2021.
