Claude Code's new Mods system lets developers rewrite the AI coding tool from the inside

Anthropic has introduced a new system called "Mods" for its Claude Code tool, allowing developers to rewrite the AI coding assistant from within. This plugin-based middleware runs directly inside the application and enables users to modify both the interface and functionality through JavaScript or TypeScript functions. Developers can hook into specific events such as tool calls, user prompts, and UI rendering to add custom panels, intercept commands, or create entirely new features. While some built-in capabilities like the /diff command are already implemented as Mods, Anthropic provides sample code on GitHub for further customization. The company warns that because Mods operate with full user permissions and lack sandboxing, they should only be installed from trusted sources. These modifications are compatible with the CLI, desktop app, and partially with the VS Code extension, where organizations can also control which Mods are permitted to load. The first official plugin, named "You Should Know," launches a separate agent to monitor Claude's output and alert users to potentially missed important information.
