Clipto uses AI to search terabytes of video and is now valued at $250M

Clipto, a San Francisco-based startup founded in 2023, has raised $15 million in equity funding at a $250 million post-money valuation. The company uses AI to index videos, audio, images, and documents stored on users' computers, allowing them to search via natural language or through AI assistants like ChatGPT. Founder Henry Kang, who previously worked on related AI problems and sold a startup to Tencent, started Clipto to address content overload. While initially aimed at video creators, its user base now includes lawyers, doctors, researchers, and other professionals. Clipto reports over 30 million users, hundreds of thousands of paying subscribers, and $15 million in annual recurring revenue, while remaining profitable. The startup recently integrated Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect AI tools to indexed files, with processing done locally on the user's device. Unlike offerings from Adobe, Apple, and Google, Clipto searches across file types and platforms, and the new funding will support AI models, infrastructure, and more AI agent integrations.
