Cracks are emerging in the AI spending boom
techcrunch ·
Investor sentiment regarding artificial intelligence infrastructure spending is shifting from enthusiasm to anxiety as major tech companies report significant financial strains. Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft have collectively outlined plans to spend over $740 billion on capital expenditures this year, primarily for data centers and chips. This massive outlay has led to negative free cash flow for several firms, raising concerns about mounting debt and the potential return on investment. The market reacted sharply, with the Nasdaq falling 2.9% and individual stocks like Nvidia, Broadcom, and Qualcomm suffering notable declines. Alphabet experienced its worst trading day in history, dropping 12% after reporting negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion, partly due to AI features cannibalizing its core search advertising revenue. Similarly, Amazon and Meta reported substantial negative free cash flows, despite growth in their respective cloud and ad businesses. While Microsoft maintained positive free cash flow, it attributed lower-than-expected spending to third-party capacity delays, which negatively impacted smaller computing power providers. Consequently, investors are increasingly worried that the costs of meeting AI demand may outweigh immediate financial benefits, complicating future ventures such as Anthropic’s upcoming IPO.
