Crusoe abandons $1.25B plan to use Boom turbines at AI data centers
techcrunch ·
Crusoe, a Denver-based AI data center startup that recently secured $3.9 billion in funding, has terminated its agreement to purchase Boom Supersonic’s stationary power turbines. The abandoned deal involved an investment of $1.25 billion for 29 Superpower turbines intended to support Crusoe's expanding operations, including its major campus in Abilene, Texas. Boom CEO Blake Scholl confirmed the partnership dissolution on X, stating that turbines no longer fit into Crusoe’s immediate primary power strategy at their key sites. In response, Crusoe emphasized its flexible approach to energy sourcing, citing the need to select solutions like wind, solar, and grid power that best suit each evolving site. While this cancellation represents a setback for Boom, which raised $300 million to commercialize its turbine business, the company remains focused on delivering units to other customers. Boom plans to supply approximately 250MW of capacity next year and targets 1GW by 2028, with Scholl expressing openness to future collaboration if circumstances change. Crusoe acknowledged Boom as a valuable partner during the development phase but concluded that the current arrangement was not the right fit.
