Danu Robotics’ fight to build a better recycling robot
techcrunch ·
Amy Ma founded Danu Robotics after realizing that high-end office buildings were incorrectly mixing recyclables with trash. Based in Edinburgh, the company has developed H.E.R.O., a recycling robot designed to sort waste more cheaply and quickly than existing solutions. Unlike competitors that use suction systems, H.E.R.O. utilizes a pincer claw and leverages AI to continuously improve its software performance. The startup has secured $5 million in late-seed funding and holds signed contracts worth $500,000, with over 200 customers in its sales pipeline. Ma argues that the robot offers a strong return on investment, generating significant additional revenue for sorting centers while costing less than rival machines. Current plans involve making the device smaller and sturdier to enable portable use at events, hospitals, and airports. This shift aims to allow waste recycling at the source rather than relying solely on dedicated facilities. The technology targets the broader $20 billion recycling sorting market across Europe and North America.
