Deepgram acquires Pipecat-maker Daily to bolster its voice AI infrastructure
techcrunch ·
Deepgram has acquired Daily, the creator of the popular open-source voice AI infrastructure Pipecat, to strengthen its position in the rapidly consolidating voice AI sector. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but both companies committed to keeping Pipecat open-source and vendor-neutral. Pipecat serves as a framework that manages real-time voice and video streams while integrating speech-to-text, large language models, and text-to-speech components with reduced latency. Daily’s co-founder Kwindla Kramer cited Deepgram CEO Scott Stephenson’s dedication to maintaining an open ecosystem as a key factor in choosing this acquisition over other interested parties. This move allows Deepgram to expand beyond pure voice processing into broader real-time communication tools and agent orchestration. Additionally, the companies are launching the Real-Time Context Standard (RCS), an open protocol designed to define metadata and guidance for voice agents. Both Deepgram and Daily share a history from the same Y Combinator batch in 2016, facilitating a cultural alignment between the engineering teams.
