Discovered Materials Announces $9M Funding Round To Deploy AI Agents In Search Of Cooler Chip Materials
aiinsider ·
Discovered Materials has raised $9 million in seed funding, with Lightspeed India Partners leading the round and participation from Peak XV Partners and angel investors including Paul Graham. The startup, which recently emerged from Y Combinator, plans to use swarms of AI agents to find new materials for more thermally efficient integrated circuits, aiming to address the rising heat and energy costs of data centers. The company was founded by Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, who combined Sridhar's AI agent expertise with Ramdas's Stanford materials science research. Their software pipeline integrates Anthropic models with custom physics models to generate and simulate candidate materials, enabling thousands of exploratory guesses per day compared to about twenty during Ramdas's PhD. Discovered Materials has also released examples of newly identified materials and a benchmark tool to track AI model performance. Lightspeed partner Hemant Mohapatra noted that finding viable materials is like solving a complex convergence problem, as candidates must meet multiple criteria simultaneously, and that filtering and synthesizing promising options remains the key bottleneck.
