Disney Agrees to Hire Majority of Character.AI Workforce Following Chatbot Startup’s Bankruptcy
aiinsider ·
Disney has agreed to hire the majority of the workforce from Character.AI, an AI chatbot startup that recently filed for bankruptcy. According to legal filings reported by Bloomberg, Disney will extend employment offers to at least 60 employees, representing most of the company's staff. The estimated annual compensation for these hires totals $60 million, and the vast majority of affected employees have already accepted the positions. This hiring move coincides with the appointment of Character.AI’s former CEO, Karandeep Anand, as Disney’s first Chief Technology Officer. Although Disney previously agreed to acquire some of Character.AI's assets for $20 million, this deal remains a stalking horse bid, allowing other companies to submit higher offers. Character.AI had struggled with high operational costs, regulatory engagement, and potential litigation liabilities. These challenges included a lawsuit regarding a minor's death linked to chatbot usage and government investigations into child safety concerns. The arrangement provides a professional transition for Character.AI's talent pool as the startup winds down its operations.
