Elon Musk throttles Grok Bot limits due to ‘unsustainably high’ costs
techcrunch ·
Elon Musk has reduced usage limits for the Grok Bot AI service, citing that the costs of serving the bot were unsustainably high relative to revenue. This change occurred over the Halloween weekend in 2026, causing some users to find their weekly limits unexpectedly maxed out despite low overnight activity. Musk confirmed on X that the throttling was intentional and not a system glitch. Despite these financial constraints, the AI division, now part of SpaceX's Super Intelligence unit, reported significant profitability, including a $431 million profit last month. The company noted that profits would have been even higher without $1.2 billion in one-time costs associated with the acquisition of Cursor. Musk previously praised Grok Bot as having the fastest growth he had ever seen in his life. However, he has not yet disclosed how subscriber usage limits will be adjusted in the future.
